Centura Football is 1-0

The Centura varsity football team traveled 150 miles to North Platte to take on the Kimball Longhorns. The long drive back was a happy one for the Centurions, as they defeated the Longhorns 14-6. The first half ended in a 0-0 tie as both teams turned the ball over multiple times. The 2nd half started much the same way the 1st half went, as the two teams traded turnovers. Kimball was the first to reach the end zone on a 26 yard pass, the 2-point conversion failed. It didn’t take long for the Centurions to strike back. Willie Packer took the kickoff down inside the 25 yard line. From there Jose Guzman scored on a 1-yard plunge, the drive was capped off with a successful 2-point conversion from Kaleb Johnson. The Centurion defense came through, as it had all night, when Jose Guzman intercepted a pass and took it back to the end zone for a touchdown. The 2-point conversion was no good. The Centura defense had to step up one last time in the closing minutes. Kimball was able to drive to the Centura 17 yard line and on 4th and 17 they broke up a long pass in the end zone.

Overall it was a tough battle, but the Centurions remained committed for 48 minutes to come away with a terrific win.

Centura is 1-0 and will travel to Wood River next Friday night.

Solon Borglum Historical Monument Dedication

solon borglum markerSolon Borglum carved huge Native American figures in the Cairo bluffs.  Those carvings may have inspired his older brother, John “Gutson” Borglum, to carve Mount Rushmore years later.  A historical marker on Highway 2, approximately 5 miles west of Cairo, will be dedicated on Saturday, August 20th at 10:00 am in recognition of the works of the Borglum Brothers.

This marker is the cumulation of a community partnership between the students at Centura Jr./Sr. High School and the town of Cairo for the past school year.
